The simplest would have been to get a personal laptop - either my own MacBook Pro, or perhaps just a MacBook with it's one silly port, but delightfully light weight. The performance hit wouldn't really be that noticeable for the kinds of things I do when travelling. The biggest downside would be when I travel for partial work purposes. Would I then take both work and personal laptops? Ugh. So the iPad started to have some appeal - if I could use only an iPad when travelling on personal-only travel, that would be awesome, and when travelling for work taking an iPad and a MacBook Pro seems far less ludicrous than taking 2 laptops.
